A Star Has Landed In Penang, Malaysia | Jun Ong
Imagine walking around in heavy shadows, darkness to find yourself heading towards light; the light of 500m LED lights. A massive LED star is installed by the artist Jun Hao Ong in a neglected four story cement structure; A Lighten up web penetrating through and out of the building floorsThis project is one of Jun Hao Ong many installations, he is an artist/architect known for his experimenting projects with low cost materials and high tech applications, creating unique installations all over the country.
The Star is Ong’s submission to an art exhibition. Made under the supervision of Eeyan Chuah and Gabija Grusaite; the Star serves as a light source for the 2015 Urban Xchange public art festival at the suburb of Raja Uda of Butterworth, Penang, Malaysia.
“The Star is a glitch in current political and cultural climate of the country, it is a manifestation of the sterile conditions of Butterworth, a once thriving industrial port and significant terminal between the mainland and island.” Says Ong describing his project.
He created a powerful visual impact rather a beautiful one; only by the use of simple components. A welded steel frame, supporting cables those simple structures put together with aligned LED lights created an illuminate sculpture. Penetrating the building existing structure and radiating a network of lights outside the floor perimeters; this Star surely lights up the dark scenery drawing attention towards the exhibition.
